About Jo Phee
Biography - Yoga Alliance (USA) E-RYT 500 Trainer
Jo Phee is a senior trainer for Yin Yoga teachers around the world. A long time student and senior teaching assistant to Yin Yoga founders, Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers, Jo was one of the first Yin Yoga teachers trained by Paul and Sarah more than a decade ago. Jo has spent 2000 hours of apprenticeship with both of them, and was personally tutored by Paul to teach his entire teacher training curriculum. She is currently under mentorship with Sarah to be groomed as a Mentor Teacher in Sarah’s Insight Yoga Institute. With more than 17 years of yoga experience, Jo has accumulated over 10,000 hours of teaching public Yin classes in Singapore before she became a full time travelling teacher.
Brought up solely with Chinese Medicine from childhood by her Taoist parents, Jo has been familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) all her life. All of her initial education about TCM was based on practical knowledge passed down from generations in her Chinese family. To add theoretical basis to her personal experience, Jo went on to study at the Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine with four different professors, focusing primarily on the Meridian system. She completed her Acupuncture Meridians course with Dr Susan Stumpf and has studied Medical Qigong and Acupressure.
Jo studied with the Bihar School of Yoga (Satyananda Yoga Academy) where she took rigorous examination to learn to teach the original Yoga Nidra practice as devised by Swami Satyananda of the Bihar School. Her formal education in this practice and her knowledge of the Chinese Meridian system inspired her to develop a systematic and detailed outline of a new practice - Meridian Nidra. She was the first to introduce Meridian Chant, "Guasha" treatment and Myofascial Release into Yin Yoga teacher training programs worldwide.
Driven by a profound interest in functional anatomy and fascial studies, Jo has been attending human cadaver dissection labs every year in the United States. She has performed numerous full body dissections (embalmed and fresh tissues), including a dedicated neuroanatomical dissection of the brain and spinal cord, and has had the opportunity to study up to 30 cadaver specimens to date. Jo obtained her Myofascial Release Therapy training in the USA and has studied with renowned scientists and anatomists in the fascia field in America and Europe. She has attended fascia school both at the Ulm University Germany and the Anatomical Institute of Leipzig University. She has recently participated in the 4th International Fascia Research Congress held in Washington DC. Jo is a founding member of the Fascia Research Society, where she is constantly kept up-to-date with the latest science and education in fascia research.
Jo’s teachings are a blend of the science of Western Anatomy fused with Eastern Medicine and Philosophy. She resides in Singapore but spends majority of the year traveling around the world delivering Yin Yoga Teacher Training programs. She has taught more than 50 Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings around the world.
